Long ago, there lived an extraordinary grizzled bear with the capacity for abstract reasoning and a penchant for philosophizing. The world around him constantly filled him with awe and wonder. Even the mundane and trivial details of existence prodded him into intricate contemplation and reflection.

So it was that one day, while eating a fish he caught in the middle of a shallow river, this bear reflected on how his body turned what he ate into himself. If this was so, he wondered if could he turn himself into what he ate, a fish, for example.

No sooner did the bear think this than he magically transformed into a fish. As a fish, he lost his power of reason and burning curiosity. His life became greatly diminished, one completely limited by blind instinct. This went on for several weeks, until another bear caught him. Fortunately, the sight of a bear reminded the fish of his true nature. No sooner did the fish remember that he was a bear than he became one.

As the startled she-bear ran off, the philosophical bear reflected on how it was better to be himself than a fish.
