Wow, this semester is about to pick up in a hurry! I have 4 classes, two 1 credit and 2 6 credit classes. I'm making enough money at my work (working 4 days a week), that i dropped the student loan and paid the 2900$ school bill myself this semester. Very proud and very happy. Now about the last 3 semesters of loans that I owe .. >
Anyway, for those of you in Ottawa, I'm having a piece performed there by the Ottawa New Music Ensemble. It's part of their 60x60 project, 60 pieces by 60 composers, each a 'minute' long. Should be an interesting concert, I hope my piece makes a good impression. January 30th.
After that is our March 12th concert ... a percussion concert which I'm going to spam a piece out for because I want to focus on the 'big' projects. I sort of signed up for this program out of pity: our last composer's meeting, nobody was willing to sign up for this percussion program (we usually have 6 composers on each 'program' when we hire an outsider to perform), so I cautiously waved my hand in the air, even though I wasn't sure I wanted to participate.
I still don't want to write this piece at all, but I'll do it, and I'll do my best, its just taking valuable time!
After that, I have two huge projects, the first is an voice/orchestra piece for my friend who asked me to write her such a piece. She's going to enter it into the concerto competition at school, so it needs to be done by April. I'm aiming to have at least half of it done, enough to enter into the competition.
The second huge project is a ballet for our May 15th concert. I'm going to write a two dancer/7 instrument ballet for that ... super ambitious. I'll be amazed if I succeed (fully) ... hopefully a piece that runs as long as 15 minutes too, which is a lot of music. I have it mapped out structurally, they'll be 5 parts, male solo, duet dance, female solo, duet dance, finale. The basic theme is "In our village, folk say god crushes the moon into stars." I got the line out of Ivan Denisovich strangely enough. I'm going Stravinsky, folk ballet with violent ending ha ha!
So ... those are the big music projects for the semester, should be fun! ' />
