As far as the CoH issue goes, since the equipment and names of maps place the game in the late 1944 to 1945 period, there were not a lot of victorious German operations on which to base the campaigns. Of course they could go back in time to scrounge up some operations, but I don't think players accustomed to Tigers & Panthers and Panzershreks & StG44s would enjoy having to use the crappy equipment Germany had in the early war. At the time of the invasion of Russia their best tanks were the lame Mark IVs you get with the expansion Germans (NOT the one that comes with the Wehrmacht in the original) and a smaller Mark III whose gun is available as an upgrade on the armored car in the current game. A semi-realistic German campaign would not be fun for the very simple reason that they lost the war.

True, but the impressive EASTERN FRONT mod does deal with this by switching to a later period on the Russian front with the heavier tanks available, plus the Red Army faction as well. In CoH itself it would have been trickier. Maybe a Battle of the Bulge campaign or one where you had to escape from the Falaise Gap?

I thought it was a 50/50 split in the Horus Heresy, with half the primarchs revolting and their chapters with them?

I think it was nine out of twenty, with the regular Space Marines having slightly more manpower. Since the Heresy dozens, maybe hundreds, of new chapters have been founded for the normal Space Marines, whilst the CSM seem to have remained in their original chapters (albeit augmented by lots of daemon units).

As far as their predating the Zerg, that's what they have to deal with. The Zerg got to the video game market first, so it is inevitable that subsequent similar races will be compared to them.

The Tyranids did appear in computer games earlier, such as SPACE HULK on the PC (in 1992) and SPACE CRUSADE and VENGEANCE OF THE BLOOD ANGELS on the Amiga and PC (in 1993 and 1995). SPACE HULK was particularly successful for its time.

PENNY ARCADE has an interesting take on the reaction of old-school WARHAMMER fans whenever anyone says they've ripped Blizzard off (which I know you're not doing).
