The biggest suggestion I can give you is to find the style that suits you best.
I personally like to set up a loose framework of what I want to happen and where the story will go. I know my players are at A and that I'd like to get them to B but I really don't care how they get there or if they go to C first.
I tend to improve a lot too. Some people like that, some don't. I also tend to have a hand waiving approach to the rules. My biggest measure of a successful session is if everyone had fun.
If you need to find people try your local hobby store. They will either have a mailing list or a bulletin board you can post to.
Forum posts should be like a skirt. Long enough to cover the topic but short enough to keep your attention.
Has anyone DM'ed a D&D campaign?
