I think you're talking about Diablo II? In any case, shouldn't there be a CD key for his hard disks? I can't imagine that you wouldn't be able to use them unless it's a MMPORG or anything. Even the games I've played with online content have allowed all of us in the house to register the same CD key.
If you are able to use the same CD key that came with the hard disks and he just doesn't have it anymore, if he still has it installed, it should be in one of the notepad documents or such in the folder. If he doesn't still have it installed, it's still sometimes in the data stored on the disk. All you have to do is "open" it instead of "run" the disk.
If you aren't able to use the same CD key for whatever reason, then I can't help you
