I'd heard about this resurrection stuff before and I kept thinking "I don't remember dying at the end of Mass Effect." I had to wiki what people were talking about and it's Shepherd dying during cinematics at the beginning of Mass Effect 2. I was mightily confused until I found that out. I agree with your comment that it does allow for some alteration and re-leveling of your main playable character.
