If you take him on and don't do all you can to make him happy (and that includes having man on elf assassin action) he turns on you later and tries to finish what he started.
This is unnecessary. I gave him all the appropriate gifts and talked to him in camp a few times, choosing favorable options, and he didn't attack me. No funny business required. I DID have his approval rating near the top, but a friend of mine did it and said he hardly talked to Zev at all, and didn't get attacked. I think you just have to move from neutral to "warm" (or whatever the first thing is) which is only 25 points or so. Could be wrong about that, but I know for sure you don't need teh buttsecks.
