Aemon's right- as long as your vital data is backed up, you might as well keep using the computer. Use diagnostic software if you can, but beyond that a broken HD is functionally identical to a HD you won't use for fear of breaking it.

I'd say back your data up, and just keep in mind that you may have to replace your HD within 6 months. Do you have an extended warranty? I had one with my Dell laptop, and they just sent me a new hard drive when mine failed. Otherwise, start saving up for either a new computer or a new hard drive.

Thanks for the insight guys, no I don't have any warranty on it, I bought the drive off ebay over 2 years ago so it has been through its paces. Further tests showed it has trouble spininng up, it starts to whirl and stops, I gave it a quick light tap on the top and it spun up to full speed and the computer recognized it, so it sounds like it is the drive failing and the enclousre should be fine, either way once I get stuff of it I'll probably just use it as a temp directory to dump files to before encoding them or something...

Not really about gaming at all, but hey what can you do? - 04/11/2009 11:44:54 PM 478 Views
If I were you, I'd do two things (in addition to getting the data off, like you're doing). - 05/11/2009 03:28:58 AM 370 Views
