I recently tried to replay Baldur's Gate, and almost immediately threw my hands up in horror at the incredibly out-dated interface and gave up. The game has aged horrendously.
If the interface is what did you in, you probably won't find Planescape to be much better. The graphics actually still look really nice - everything is hand crafted, no gratuitous copy & paste - but it's low res. You can get a mod that will knock the maximum resolution up, however, which is great. So, the graphics have aged a bit, the interface definitely has, though personally I have a fine time with both. Combat and game mechanics are a heavily modified version of the same D&D stuff you'd find in Baldur's Gate 1 & 2, Icewind Dale, etc. I love it, some do not.
Everything that really makes the game superb has aged terrifically. Writing, plot, character, voice acting - all excellent, and, minus the very last one, the best you will find anywhere, and without peer. I will say that the game requires some effort, though. There is a lot of reading; it's not a cinematic experience. Furthermore, the plot is there, waiting to be discovered, just as much as it's something that you will meet while playing through the game. If you do no optional quests and don't go out of your way, you'll be far less impressed than if you get invested and... try, so to speak.
Re: The Original Post: Agreed. Fucking sweet on the game being re-released, fucking atrocious on the price. Even in its rebirth Interplay still manages to fuck up Black Isle. Un-fucking-believable. How I wish they could be erased forever.
