But by employing a modern aesthetic, it does encourage playing in a more modern style.

Call of Duty is not a simulator in any way. It is a gameplay-centric FPS with a modern military aesthetic and veneer through over it. Not a simulator, not intended to be a simulator.
So I suppose what I'm saying is that, if you want a military sim or expect a military sim, then you're not the target audience of that single-player campaign. Not that your complaint is "wrong".

Possibly not the best choice of words. I certainly wasn't expecting GRAW or anything like that.
CoD4's flaw is that it tells you to ignore basic military tactics which will see you through pretty much every other FPS ever made, even sci-fi ones like GEARS OF WAR and HALO. IIRC, even when other games had respawning enemies (like CoD2) they at least gave you enough of a breather between waves so you could advance and capture the next strongpoint before the respawns, whilst CoD4 never lets up. It actually gets comically unrealistic after a while.
I myself think that COD4 has the best single-player mode of any FPS... and I didn't care for its multiplayer.
Really? Better than any of the Half-Lifes, Far Cry (not the awful FC2), FEAR, Portal, CoD1 (probably still the best combat in the series) and 2, MoH: Allied Assault, BioShock, Prey, Quake 4, Doom 3, Serious Sam (not SS2, which was rubbish), STALKER, ST Voyager Elite Force, Aliens versus Predator 2, or the Jedi Knight series?
A nice nuke scene and a couple of weird, arty (playing someone who's about to die) interactive cut scenes don't really make up for the game's flaws, IMO.
Although they were definitely onto something with the Chernobyl level, which was the game's moment of genius (even if I strongly suspect they nicked the idea from STALKER).
So what's the most disappointing game in your current library?

The problem is that it is counter-intuitive in a military simulator.

A simulator? You're definitely approaching the game wrong if that's what you were expecting.
