Suggestion 2: Download a bunch of mods.
As far as getting your ass kicked on side missions: Oblivion uses level scaling for all the enemies so you should be able to accomplish most side missions at anytime. Hell, on one play through one of the first things I did was go to the Arena and beat it. Starting at level one.
