If there's only 4, the wizard can't afford to just leave it there.
Is the party bringing the stone with them? Have it be stolen in the middle of the night. They can either fight off the theives, and then have map or a note or something point the way to the Evil Wizard...
...or the stone could get stolen, and they could Track the thieves back to the castle.
I like the idea of an intelligent, snarky, Improved Familiar leading a group of thugs.

Like 20 feet across large. Size category Huge or Gargantuan? So I think that without sufficiently powerful magic, its going to be quite hard to take the rock or even break it apart. And they only saw the top of it, there is much more buried deep in the ground.
No one in the party has any formal arcane training or knowledge. The closest thing they have is the bard who has no idea what the stone is. There is the collegium of war and magick to the south, but that is at least a fortnight away by foot. However, it is their best bet of really learning what's going on unless they try to Speak With Dead with the orc chief.
Forum posts should be like a skirt. Long enough to cover the topic but short enough to keep your attention.

Hm... I'd say, either make the party interested in researching it, or have the bad guys steal it
