I'm stuck with my smartphone. I could get an ordinary cell phone, I suppose, but those are becoming increasingly rare and increasingly obsolete, and it is clear that smartphones are the way of the future and are here to stay (until they're replaced with something even more intrusive, and so on). So I as much as I'd like to, I can't get away from them and simply try to minimize my exposure. But you're right, there is still a slew of information that I am giving away simply because it is too difficult or complicated to do otherwise.
But with the Xbox One, I can simply choose not to get it. Kinect does not appeal to me on any level, I simply don't care for motion controls, or voice commands. I don't use them on my phone and I won't use them here. Then, in addition to that, there is the matter of it even further (potentially) compromising my privacy. Sure I don't expect Microsoft to be spying on me, not in any particularly devious way... But I wouldn't be surprised if it had some background algorithms running to further target ads to me. Not harmful to me, but I still don't want it done. And I'm quite convinced that sooner or later the time will come when prosecutors and investigators will seek to use data collected by the Kinect. Am I inclined to place my faith in the legal system deciding in favor of privacy? They don't really have the best track record. So, even though all of these are hypothetical examples that would most likely be irrelevant to me, they still further set me against the Xbox One. And unlike smartphones, I can easily keep this gadget out of my life, and that's just what I'll do.
So yeah, maybe on a logical level the outrage is misplaced... But on an emotional level I still love it. But then, I'm an ass who enjoys reading about the Wii U's poor sales.
