So I am not sure how many of you types ever played the Thief games. They were pretty much Assassin's Creed, except that they were good. They emphasized stealth to a ridiculous extent; it was practically impossible to fight if you got caught by a guard. Good and bad.
AC was absurd; you could fight off guards forever if you had so much as an iota of hand-eye coordination. But it provided a bit of fun.
Dishonored has taken both of these--the unforgiving stealth of Thief and the awesomeness of killing people that is AC--and combined it into what (so far; I'm not finished yet) has been an absolutely fantastic game. The narrative presentation is great, the environment is beautiful, and the gameplay is spot-on. It plays quite a bit like Bioshock; sword in one hand, crossbow/pistol/grenade/MAGICOMGZ in the other. Health doesn't regen; you have to find food or use a potion, though they're scattered fairly liberally about. Magic does regenerate; though if you use spells quickly, you'll find that your mana cap decreases, and you'll have to use a potion to raise it back up again.
Stealth plays a critical role in this game; I have been playing a no-kill runthrough, which is difficult but possible, so I don't really know how extended combat is. The game provides a lot of ways to get through missions. You can kill everyone in indiscriminate slaughter, you can kill only key targets, or you can be a carebear like me and come up with clever ways to get people out of the way without killing anyone. Killing people raises the chaos of the city setting, leading to more nasty things going on. The more you kill, the darker the story gets.
And, um, that's about it. Anyone else played it so far?
