I disagree about it being the only good third level spell;lighting bolt and haste are also excellent
Joel Send a noteboard - 08/09/2012 06:26:08 PM
I remember thinking that low level wasn't as cool... but also remembering fireballs as being a lot more epic.
the only 3rd level spell worth having and the reason why bards are a viable "wildcard" member.
i still prefer the BG1 to BG2, just because when you start everything is a danger and when you go down you go down hard. in BG2 sure there were times when you were massively over-powered but you still survived long enough to think "i'm gonna make it, i'm gonna make it, i'm gonna-oh maaaan"
Third level spells are where mages start pulling their own weight in AD&D 2nd ed. They get tricky at fifth though, because the new cone of cold spells 1d4+1/level yields the same average damage as fireball and lightning bolts 1d6/level—but the latter pair is capped at 10d6, while cone of cold keeps giving 1d4+1/level forever, making it better on average when the mage hits eleventh level, and by thirteenth level the max damage is higher, too.
