Yeah, the base plot was nothing exceptional, but I really enjoyed the mix of top quality graphics, voice acting, pacing and general presentation. There are plenty of games that excel in a couple of those areas, but, to me, not many that successfully pull them all together. "Story immersion" is a good phrase to describe what I'm talking about, I guess. Final Fantasy has always done a really good job with that, and it's the primary reason I'm such a fan of the series. I find it difficult to get emotionally involved in most video games; the voice actors are completely unnatural, the animations are off, the story is a translation of something that MIGHT make sense in its original language, etc. Final Fantasy, though, comes close to the level of production quality that you find in movies, and I really like that.
FF13 was certainly like watching a movie, no doubt about that, lol. In a good way, I mean, I'm not referring to too many cutscenes or anything. But the plot still just seemed... meh to me. I don't remember at this point what was so significant or special about Lightning that made her the main character, and so many of the other characters just seemed thrown in for practically no reason. Frocobo may be awesome, but what exactly was it or Sazh doing in the storyline? How would the story have changed if they were omitted? Plus there was the generic kid that gets thrown into every jrpg these days, and I found myself never really caring very much for Snow or Serah. When in FF9 Zidane "died" at the end, and then showed up up the ending, that was awesome and I was really happy. When Tidus had to leave Yuna at the end of FFX, that was sad but also awesome. In 13, I just didn't feel much emotional attachment to the characters at all.
The presentation was most definitely top notch though, no arguments there. The graphics were beautiful, the voices were great, and everything was put together well. After playing Star Ocean 3 again recently, I can definitely appreciate how important those factors are.
Heh, thanks, but that's actually not the case. She likes to watch some of the games I play, but, I kid you not, the only video games she will play are Banjo Kazooie, and Gex. There's an N64 in the middle of my entertainment center just for those two games. I guess it's a serious case of nostalgia or something. I actually bought her Banjo Tooie at one point; she played it for about ten minutes before going back to the original. She just likes knowing how to do everything and doesn't want to figure out something new, I guess. Anyway, I'm working on that.
It's alright, the N64 is surprising cool, since my friend's fraternity had one in their living room last year. It went very well with their 60 inch flat panel, lol. But best of luck with your efforts... As long as you get her to enjoy at least some RPGs, that would be a success in my book.
Too…..much…..gaming

FF-XIII is actually a lot of fun if you go into it with the right expectations.
