I really enjoy Caesar III, but the bugs with the food supply once you hit a certain level always frustrate me. I won't go in to those, but I'm looking for a substitute to play.
What I like about Caesar III is that it's SIMPLE, but not The Sims simple. Does that make sense? I tried to play Civ III, but the UI and sheer volume of mechanics and choices made the game more complex than I wanted to spend time on. It's not that I thought I COULDN'T figure it out, I just didn't want to take the time. When I played Caesar III, it was a demo from a Lords of Magic CD (god I need to get another copy of that one...) and it was intuitive and straightforward. Maybe it's just that the "tutorial" for Caesar III was more clear. I don't know.
I'm NOT very interested in warfare-oriented building. I enjoyed Lords of Magic, so obviously it doesn't bother me. But I vastly prefer city building and I just really liked how Caesar III played!!
Does anyone have any recommendations they think I would enjoy? I COULD always give Civ III another shot...but I'm not sure I want to if there's a better game for my tastes out there!
Oh, another strategy game I enjoyed was Dragonshard (which came from Dungeons and Dragons, it was based in Eberron)

I haven't played anything that matches what you're looking for in a long, long time.

Quick note about From Dust: play it on a PC. I didn't enjoy the 360 controls very much. *NM*
