It could fill a fighting role via companion/shifting, it could fill a damage-caster role, or it could fill a healing role. And if needed, to some degree, you could change what role you were filling in the middle of a fight.
I was pretty bummed out when they took a lot out of that with 4ed. healing was barely there, and that was the main thing I did with druid characters.
