In fact, GTA:VC is my favorite and I play that exclusively with the keyboard.
However, I've found it very hard lately to get fine control on steering with my keyboard lately. Maybe I just need to figure out how to steer better. It just seems that if I hit A or D I steer all the way to one side in GTA:4 and now in Saints Row 2.
So I figured I'd give a gamepad a try.

Assuming the game supports gamepads, all you have to do is plug it in.

Certain games, often those from XBLA, will ONLY support the 360 pad for the controller option.

If you have a wired controller, just plug it in. Otherwise, you need a receiver (link inside).
