Basic(history part) story is that Archangel's were sent to Earth to guide man to heaven. They started being worshipped and lost thought themselves gods...Greek Gods, in fact. God punished them by making them mortal. Satan sends demons to fill that void, they become the Roman gods, but the demons being worshipped are trapped to their "role". Jesus is sent to Earth to end the demons reign and refocus worship on God. Jesus ended their reign by turning them mortal as well. (Hey, if it worked for Dad...).
The problem is, these now mortal demons and angels had kids and grandkids, etc. Those kids manifest some of the traits of their ancestor(s). Someone has gathered the Demonspawn people together. You play a descendant of Mercury who is recruited by a descendant of Zeus to contact other greek descendants and prepare for war against the Roman descendants.
Tell me that doesn't sound like one kick ass set up for a game.
