I don't feel like it was as bad with those games though. They were earlier in the series and still fleshing out the lore. Plus they were RTSes, too, which don't rely on story as much as RPGs do.
You may be correct, but you would be surprised how much text I've written about the storyline of the StarCraft games. RTSes require less depth and complexity in their story than RPGs, but it still needs to be coherent and well structured, and when significant portions of the lore are retconned, it shows.
Also, I think WarCraft III's story is pretty terrible.
With World of Warcraft, they've been constructing an elaborate world for years and years now, and it's actually pretty mature at this point. I just feel it's awkward to pull another continent out of the hat and declare that it has been magically hidden until this moment. Seems way too generic.
I've never played World of WarCraft, but I did follow some of the lore back in the beginning because I was working on some WarCraft II projects and I was always quite dedicated to using existing lore to fit our needs when possible. That pretty much ended with The Burning Crusade though. Both of the races introduced made me want to facepalm so much.
On the one hand you've got Draenei retconned into Eredar who were in fact not responsible for corrupting Sargeras, but indeed the other way 'round, giving us a race of holy space aliens that have the name of the primitive inhabitants of Draenor who were subjugated and slaughtered by the Orcs.
And on the other, we've got High Elves who've left the Alliance because some racist human Marshall apparently outranked the Prince/King of the Elves, and because of that they've decided to abandon their allies to join Trolls (their ancestral enemies), Orcs (who burned and slaughtered their way through Quel'thalas during the Second War) and the Undead (who are directly responsible for the destruction of Quel'thalas, the desecration of the Sunwell and are commanded by the reanimated corpse of the elven general who perished fighting them). I assume there's an explanation for that somewhere in the game, but I stopped paying attention before I was ever told what it was.
Err. So yeah, sorry for the off-topic rant. But seriously, WarCraft's lore has been bizarre at times.
