It's a third-person action game, probably more like GEARS OF WAR than anything else. It's not an FPS (well, it effectively is but you don't have an 'in-the-person's-head view'. It's not squad-based either. You have two NPC companions whom you can order around a little, but to be honest I played the entire game without telling them to do anything and it was fine.
The game is heavily based on shooting and melee combat. There aren't really any puzzles. The only thing in common with DOOM 3 is that you find audio logs sitting around which fill in the backstory. Beyond that, you just shoot everything that moves. Something I liked was the game ripping the mickey out of GEARS OF WAR and similar cover-based games. There is no cover system and no regenerating health. To get health, you have to wade right into the middle of an enemy horde and carry out special attacks which, if sufficiently awesome, will result in health bonuses, attack bonuses etc.
It's a solid game, but a little short at around 6 hours. They do a nice job of trying to vary it up a little and not make too repetitive, but at heart it's a fun, linear shooter with maybe a slightly stronger story than most of these games. I wouldn't buy it full price. I played it on the OnLive service for £4 for a five-day rental and was very happy with paying that amount for it.
