There are basically two reasons why you'd want to upgrade to a 3DS:

1. It is a significant hardware upgrade. I've heard that it's comparable to a 360 (which I don't believe), or a souped-up Wii (which I do). Whatever the case, the machine is quite powerful when compared to a DS (or DS Lite, DSi, etc.).

2. More importantly, this is where DS-style games are going to be from here on out. The DS is going to have a long half-life, but it won't be supported by 1st party or many quality 3rd party stuff from here on out. Want more Professor Layton? We're going to get another one or two on the DS, if only because they take forever to localize them, but after that the series'll be a 3DS exclusive. Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright is already a 3DS exclusive.

I follow the games.
