You'd probably like the IV - VI remakes, but most of my experience was in the "Warrior" days, too. - Edit 2

Of the new DQ remakes, I've only played IV, which was kind of a re-play for me. Dragon Warrior IV was one of my most memorable RPGs as a kid, mostly due to the chapter structure and not playing the main character until the last part. The DS remake adds an additional chapter on the end that didn't really hold my attention, but it was a positive experience overall. Brought back lots of nostalgic feelings.
Dragon Quest/Warrior stories don't tend to be all that deep, but I find that to be the nature of many "classically" styled JRPGs. Western or CRPGs aren't necessarily king in that area, but I find I can often relate to them and their characters more easily. Or, they're written with more of the native english speaker in mind and tend to not feature young, androgynous protagonists. Because of that, my next RPG will be The Witcher 2 when it releases next month.
