Why? Because Legolas said he would expect a critically acclaimed plot to be better than one developed fresh. That seems correct to me. You're comparing a proven, successful plot -- something near the top of its food chain -- to something new and untested. Something that you can assume, based on nothing but probability, will be, well, average. Seems fine to me.
