I was specifically responding to this line (which, incidentally, was the only line in the post. Not sure ho you missed it Matt ):
"You would expect the plot to be particularly good, then, compared to the plots written by game designers themselves."
I've never played the Witcher. I am in no position to comment on whether the story is any good, nor am I interested in discussing it. I certainly don't want to imply that all game writers are good at what they do, or that all game writers are better than all novelists at writing in the game industry, or anything of the sort.
But I AM responding to the implied sentiment that we should automatically expect a novelist to be able to come into a game project and do a better job at "writing" in this medium than a dedicated game writer. Or a game designer who understands how their writing will interact with the rest of the game.
And Legolas, if you read this: I totally understand why you would make the sort of assumptions that I think you've made. Looking down at game writing is a broad societal problem that leads to widespread misconceptions like that, and any heat in my post wasn't really directed at you.

Hm. I have it as a project to improve my French, but I found the gameplay pretty boring.

If you find The Witcher boring, you'll likely feel the same about Baldur's Gate 2, IWD, etc.

All right. I'll give it a shot, then. Thanks. *NM*

Make sure you get the enhanced edition, or whatever it's called.

It's funny, that, because it's based on a critically acclaimed book series.

I've heard that, yeah. I just don't think enough of it made it into the game. (minor spoilers)

The thing is, what works in a book doesn't necessarily work in a game.

Wow, I guess you touched a nerve, Legolas. New pet peeve discovered! *NM*

I got it for like $25, I'd say that's about what Fallout 3 is worth

Don't play Mass Effect 2 without playing Mass Effect 1. It's a much worse game.

Yes, play ME1 first... but opinions vary about ME2. It did the most important things better, IMO.

That's true if gameplay is more important to you than story.

ME1 wasn't even going to release on the PC initially, so I think we could be worse off.

Like SVU and NCIS are both crime dramas, stylistic differences can remain under one genre umbrella.
