Single-player -- Mass Effect 2, Just Cause 2
ME2 is an amazing game that plays like an interactive sci-fi movie. Sure, it trimmed back on some of the original's RPG elements, but it made it a leaner, meaner game. Leave the inventory management to Dragon Age, because I don't need 20 Hurricane V shotguns. Just Cause 2 is simply too much fun to keep off the list. New Vegas almost made this list, but I've been too busy to give it my proper attention.
Multi-player -- Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Starcraft 2
BC2 is the most addictive online shooter I've ever played. MW2 and Black Ops probably have better single-player, but BC2 blows them away in terms of multi. Call of Duty is for people who obsess over k/d ratios and ridiculous killstreak bonuses. BC2 is for squad teamwork and a true battlefield experience. (vehicles, class roles, fulfilling objectives, destructible set pieces) SC2's mention goes without saying, though I don't play competitively.
Biggest Surprise -- Minecraft
This game came out of nowhere and sucker-punched my spare time. It had me up to 4am one morning building a tower on a friend's server. I'm not playing it a ton right now, but I look forward to its bright indie future.
Between my listed games and playing a lot of L4D2, my Steam game status almost always has a '2' in it...
What am I looking forward to in 2011?
The Witcher 2, Portal 2, Crysis 2 (depending on reviews)... This year isn't looking much better in terms of avoiding sequels.

The sword might be grateful to the forge fire, but never fond of it.

I can see being disappointed by it, though I still enjoyed it a lot. Mass Effect 2 ruined it, for me
