The 8800GT is the same card as the 9800GT version 1. The only difference between the 9800GT version 1 and the 9800GT version 2 is the 9800GT version 2 had a die shrink using a newer factory so it was cheaper to manufacture.
I never understood why that Nvidia never dieshrunk the 9800GT to 40nm. If they did so it would have a similar die size as the GT430 (and thus similar cost), yet would perform much better in games. Not everyone needs direct x11 and bitstreaming audio. They would have to go with a 128 bit bus due to the width and length of the bus not allowing them to put a 256 bit bus, but they can always have a ddr3 card and a gddr5 card like they did with the 240.
