How many friends do you have with 360s and do you want Blu-Ray? Werthead Send a noteboard - 30/08/2009 06:23:19 PM
If you have lots of friends with 360s, then that should answer itself, as playing online is a big component of this generation.

OTOH, if you have a huge HD TV and really want to run Blu-Rays on it, then you should strongly consider PS3.

When it comes to games, 360 edges it. Its exclusives are superior to any PS3 exclusives, and the best games are coming out on both systems.

For reliability, the PS3 is better, no doubt about it. Recent studies have put the 360 failure rate at a jaw-dropping 56%. The PS3 is at less than 15% or so by comparison, and the realiability of the new PS3 Slim should be much better, based on the same being true of the PS1 and PS2 slimline models. However, the 360 replacement policy is relatively hassle-free, and you do not lose any information or data from the hard disk. Just make sure you moan at Microsoft to send you a proper new machine rather than a refurbished one (the failure rates on the refurbs are insanely high, and I think after two fail Microsoft are obligated to send you a new one).

The PS3 has not built up enough momentum to overtake the 360 in the near future, probably not before the next generation emerges. Despite the failure rate of the 360, the PS3 is simply far too expensive and it was slow getting off the starting block with its online capabilities. Also, the PS3 exclusives (such as LITTLE BIG PLANET and GRAN TURISMO) are nowhere near as good as the 360 ones (such as GEARS OF WAR, MASS EFFECT and so on). Even when games are multiformat, the 360 version seems to get more expansions, updates and more DLC, or at least those things earlier than the PS3 (such as with FALLOUT 3).

I would say that Blu-Ray and how often you play online will be the deciding factors, and if you can handle the hassle of the machine having a slightly-better-than-even chance of failure.
