I prefer them to grinds where your superhero character can kill 1,000s of NPCs in a dungeon. the challenge makes it seem more like a puzzle requiring thought than a button mashing party.
"Shadow of the Colossus" and "Bushido Blade", for example, were more fun to me than "Diablo". I like the anticipation inherent in an adventure and then its' resolution, which can be encapsulated within a boss fight, versus a non-stop grind.

I prefer it when the thinking is in finding the solution to a riddle or finding your way, rather than in having to guess that you have to hit the thing just when its eyes are open.
