Not everyone is sufficiently willing or knowledgeable to break laws and pirate video games. DRM is not excessively effective, but it does deter some people, and it allows companies to go after pirates via the DMCA.


While I can't provide sources beyond "read old slashdot posts", 90% of game piracy is committed by 10% of the player base, so game piracy has negligible impacts on the producer's profits. Wibble is right in saying DRM is about squeezing every last ounce of control as possible (especially of the second-hand/used game market). Which isn't a conspiracy at all, it's been publicly stated by Activision/EA/etc executives multiple times.
