Cities tend to be more progressive, and rural areas tend to be more conservative. I think you might see less of this trend in places like New Zealand because it's so small that the two blend together a lot more than somewhere like Australia, where you might have a rancher in Western Australia who has to drive for a day to see his neighbor or something crazy like that
