An ever closer union between democracies is not a bad thing. As an Australian citizen, I can already live and work in NZ. NZ is more liberal than Australia, and I would like it if NZers could vote in Australian elections. I especially admire that NZ has civil unions for gay men/women, whereas Australia does not. It's an interesting proposition, and one that will continue to be debated without going anywhere I imagine.
I hadn't pegged Australia as socially conservative.
From what (admittedly little) I've heard on the matter, major urban centers are more progressive, while the rural areas tend to be more conservative... at least as much as the most conservative parts of the US that gain a little more of the attention spotlight in the media occasionally
