A smack should never leave a mark (apart from maybe a bit of redness for an hour or so). If there are bruises it's not a spanking.
But how can your probably hit a child? And can you hit it harder when it gets older since it might take more before it shows?
A spanking should not be done in anger because it's harder to control yourself.
So you plan to hit it? I find that very bad.
But a smack is sometimes the only option you have to teach your child not to throw things at the cat, or stomp on the dog's paw, or put his hand on the fire/heater etc. Children cannot always be reasoned with - very young children cannot be reasoned with at all. How else are you to teach them not to do the bad things children always do as they discover their world?
My son throws things at the dog, I have never hit him. I tell him no, he respects me enough to stop when I talk to him.
And how young is a very young child? When is the proper age to use violence? I can not understand this...
