I accept that there are situations where leaders must go against popular opinion Brian Send a noteboard - 23/03/2010 02:53:00 AM
Most polls have shown that a majority of the people in the country are opposed to this reform. Passing the bill when the majority of people do not want it is just bad government and it makes me a bit sick to my stomach.

(first I am making a statement that it isn't easy to poll health care, health care is much too abstract of a question to be able to put in a simple yes/no poll...it is too complicated)

My question is, were you sick to your stomach when Bush said he wasn't going to listen to polls, he is instead going to do with what he believes was right? Polls don't matter, doing good governance matters and according to Bush America elected him for a reason, and once elected it was his job to lead and be decider in chief even though the polls were against him.

So were you sick to your stomach then? I wasn't, I actually agree with Bush in this matter...I just disagree with him on some issues and fervently believe he wasn't a good "steward"/"governor"

I dislike it any time that it happens. I don't care who is in charge, and who is making the decision....when elected officials do not follow what their constituents want, they are not doing their job. They are in government as a representative of the people that elected them. Do I expect them to make everyone happy all the time? No, but when they don't go with what their people want they should be called on it, and they shouldn't be shocked when they are voted out of office because of it.

To go even further, I don't care about Obama's part in this...he was elected with promises of health care reform as a major part of his platform....by all right he is doing what he promised to do when he was elected. It's the Senate and the House that make me sick right now, because they are the ones that passed the legislation in spite of a mountain of evidence that people do not want this particular form of health care reform.

At this point, it doesn't really matter though, I hope that this is the first step that was needed to get the broken health care system in our country fixed.
