That is a nice compliment. I wasn't interested in Sci-fi or fantasy for several years after I got married. But people can change if you give them long enough. Now we share that passion.
I wouldn't say that all roads lead to Rome but I would say that both of these roads could lead to it. And they both sound like they are worth going down for awhile.
It took awhile for me to convert to really enjoying Mozart and Bach. It took a concentrated effort from another friend to convince me to really give them a chance. It took me actually giving them a chance to grow on me. Now they are two of my favorite composers. (On the other hand, the same effort doesnt hold true for Haydn. I never made the connection with him.) But you still might want to give his music more of a chance. It is so fun to share a passion with someone.
You certainly aren't socially inept in writng. Your spirit isn't socially clueless. He probably saw the gold in your soul that is so obvious to people here.
Are you going to ask him out to do something now?
