My dad severely burned himself two years ago, in an accident at my uncle's farm. They airlifted him to a hospital in Augusta and the next day they took him into surgery for wound cleaning and such. When he was returned to the room (which he shared with two other people), he was in so much pain that he was shaking. We asked the nurse to contact the doctor on-call and get an order for pain medication, because there should have been something for post-surgery pain. Her monumentally stupid response was that he was given pain meds for the surgery and should not need anything else. My wife (who is also a nurse) nearly went off on the nurse, and it took my aunt (who is a professor of nursing) to take over, or there would have been a full-blown screaming match right there in my dad's room. The nurse contacted the on-call, my aunt spoke to him, and about 30 min later they came in with some additional pain meds. Luckily, my dad does not remember any of this, I guess he was either out of it from the surgical meds or passed out from the pain.

Good luck with your Dad. I saw that you calmly asked to speak with the charge nurse. Keep working your way up the chain, there is always someone on-call. I guess there are just a few incompetent people in every profession, sadly you have work your way through or around them.
