Keep in mind that France doesn't have remotely near as many fastfood restaurants as the US... Legolas Send a noteboard - 19/02/2010 01:23:49 PM
... and so it's not as if the customers who want non-halal hamburgers can just cross the street or go to another place two blocks down the road. It may just be 8 out of 300+ locations, but if you know how large France is, you realize that 300+ locations is really not that much, and so people who used to go to one of those eight and are now looking for another one that does offer the meat they want, might have to go quite a distance. And before you go "so what, they can just go to another hamburger place", once again, the US is extreme in its amount of fast food chains and restaurants. Quick has those couple hundred restaurants in France, McDonalds likely has a comparable or even somewhat lower amount, and that's it. There'll likely be the odd non-chain restaurant here and there that offers comparable food at comparable prices, but really very few.

By switching to halal meat entirely instead of the rather more logical move of offering both halal and non-halal, Quick gives the impression that they want to cater exclusively to the Muslim inhabitants of those neighbourhoods, thus giving the non-Muslims in said neighbourhoods, who in many cases are already uneasy about how fast their neighbourhoods have changed, further impressions of being a minority. It's really not a surprise that even the political left thinks this is a bad idea - heck, even many Muslims think it's a bad idea. My newspaper had an interview with a Muslim man eating in that restaurant, who said he was happy about them offering halal meat so he had more choice than just eating kebab, but he also said that he was uncomfortable about them offering nothing but halal meat, because he felt it would make people annoyed with the Muslim community, would make people feel that Muslims were pushing their dietary restrictions on others.
