Actually it is appropriate for them to say they are world champs. Every other nation on this earth, if it wanted to do so could form a sports league similar to the NFL. Same rules, equipment and the like. Since the only american football is played in america, does not mean that the Saints are not the champs of the world, just because the rest of the world does not play this sport.
I would understand if the winner of the MLS championship called themselves world champions, since soccer is prevelant all over, and people got miffed about the arrogance of claiming to be world champs.
But you have a point that it's less arrogant in their case than it is in the MLB and NBA, as baseball and especially basketball are international sports to a far larger extent. The MLS winner actually does get a shot at the world championship, btw - the winner of the North-American championship for clubs gets to play in the world championship for clubs.
