Unless you're going to get a desktop and a laptop, which would be at least as expensive (probably much more, actually) and prohibitively awkward for a college student (e.g. me).

I had a desktop and a laptop through part of college.

I had a laptop first, for taking notes in class and working on campus.

Then my husband (fiance at the time) put together a gaming rig for me for about $650, including flatscreen monitor.

Then I had to get a new laptop. Literally, had to. My old one up and died on me, and I take much better notes on my computer than I do by hand (was in grad school at the time; good notes were critical). The anode (or something) in the screen/motherboard something or other died, and it would have cost me $300 minimum, likely $400 to fix it. Assuming the parts for a 4/5 year old laptop could be found. So I walked back to the computer department and demanded the cheapest laptop they had. $500. Poor salesman, he tried so hard to upsell me. But I already had all the fancy stuff on my desktop.

My brother on the other hand preferred to spend $2000 on a fancy gaming laptop. I don't know why, he never left the house with it. I think he just wanted a laptop because it was 'cooler'. And then he bought a keyboard, mouse, and monitor to go with it. Silly boy might as well have bought a desktop.

The laptop still comes in handy for travelling. And uploading photos as it has an SD slot and my desktop doesn't. It's about two years old now; I don't foresee myself replacing it any time soon. It would be a waste of money as all I use it for is photos, internet, and sometimes travel, and that's usually only for internet access anyway! I'm far more likely to upgrade my desktop, and I'll do that piecemeal as necessary. That's the other thing: laptops, in most cases, need to have the whole thing replaced whereas you can just replace parts of a desktop.

Clearly, I don't understand those people either. I like my Frankenstein computer. I got to pick out the case and it has glowy lights and things on it. And I can upgrade the parts and still have my nifty case.

I mean, theoretically my laptop is obsolete. Theoretically, so is my desktop, since I haven't upgraded anything since I got it.

But anyway. I can totally see your point about buying a good laptop so you don't have to move two computers. I lived at home through college so it wasn't a big issue. I wouldn't be making so much fun of my brother for doing the same had he actually taken his laptop out of the house occasionally.
