The Vikings have had their chances. New Orleans deserves it. I think you underestimate the power of hope (or at least the amount of hope that sports can give). The fortunes of the city don't rest on the Saints, but the Superbowl will help NOLA much more than it would Minnesota.
They played the defending Super Bowl Champs in 1973. Of course, a lot of people, including most of their players, think the '73 team was BETTER than the 17-0 1972 team widely regarded as the best EVER (the '73 team had a much tougher schedule. ) Oh, and the year after that they lost to a Steelers team that would win three more in the decade and is ALSO regarded by many as the best ever. Oh, and they also lost a little later to a Raiders team generally regarded as the DIRTIEST ever. So, yeah, they had their chances brutally ripped from their grasp repeatedly.
I'll be happy if either of them beat the Colts, and yes, I realize this means a lot to ya'll even if it's hard to realize how much (there's a reason TX virtually abandoned Galveston as a major city after 1900 and moved it all 40 miles inland. ) But this one hurt Vikings fans a lot, because you can only come up just short and NEVER make it so many times before despair sets in for good.

Because of the chessgame; you put in defensive personnel based on who's in the huddle.

I really though Minnesota had the better team, but with all those fumbles it's hard to say that now.

Well, the better team doesn't always win (Just ask the 2007-08 Patriots )
