You sound like you know what you're doing, so I'll make this an honest question.

Wireless N really is faster than G.
I hear this a lot. A LOT. Obviously it's true from a technical standpoint, but for the most part, people never need or use the speed. They just think it's faster. Placebo effect, or something akin to it. Wireless G = 54mbps = 6.75MBps theoretical max, = roughly 5MBps practical bandwidth. Virtually no one in the US has that kind of internet pipe (yeah, there are a few buying the upper tier FiOS and Uverse plans), and when people talk about their router being fast, they generally mean their internet. Unless you have a big pipe and several computers simultaneously trying to max the connection, N will never be faster than G, as I understand it.
. . .except for local transfers. A gig at 5MBps (G) would take around 3 minutes. You'd save some time with N, but not much (large amount of time percentage-wise, but not a lot of practical gain). The average files, pictures, etc, are transferred indistinguishably fast with either wireless standard. As for streaming video, the blu-ray specification (1080p), is what, like 48mbps max, for audio+video? That's within the capabilities of a G setup. Which is to say nothing of the fact that there aren't many people with a big collection of ripped blu-ray disks sitting on a streaming server.
Aaaaanyway, long story short, I'm just curious what you use all the bandwidth for that you notice the bigger pipe. I've thought about switching to N (the gear isn't overly expensive) but there's just. . .no reason to do it. Or IS there? What do you know that I don't? Talk me into switching.
An honest question- Why do people spend so much money on laptops?

Yup, I bought a netbook and it's better than any amount of money I could have spent on a laptop. *NM*
