I think that the very public, holier-than-thou attitude they display combined with in-your-face displays of spirituality is partly to blame for the reaction. I wish I could have used a few less hyphens in that sentence, but oh well.

I don't like ostentatious displays of religion regardless of whose religion it is. I support banning the burqa and niqab in public as well. Small signs of devotion are sufficient to affirm a faith. If you have to affirm your faith with something as ostentatious as a burqa or a phylactery, I think there's a high level of insecurity or other neurosis at work.
