As far as the government is concerned, all marriages are "Civil Unions." There is absolutely no mandated role of religion anywhere in marriage laws.
As there is no part of any proposed law that would force churches to perform marriages of any kind (despite what the best whako fundo conspiracy theories have to say).
What the laws DO is force others to respect the rights of people they disagree with. Used to be, whether or not a restaurant could serve Blacks was dependent on an owners whimsy. The laws that trumped that idea were most certainly a violation of any concept of completely free market, but wouldn't you know it, Americans decided that a truly free market was insane a LONG time ago.
Now? It's just a tired argument for people who wish to insist that they have a right to be stubborn at their own expense.
