I've heard that the battery life is actually quite decent; a daily charge is needed, but that's par for the course for a smartphone these days. As for the voice input needing to be activated via internet; I'm not sure what someone would be doing shelling out for a nexus if they don't have internet. And given that you need to have internet to order one, it's a fairly reasonable assumption you'll have internet to activate it.
Yeah ok, I went a bit aggressive with the battery life. So far the results seem inconclusive, varying from "lasts 4 hours" to "needs a daily (read nightly) charge".
But for the voice input, it is actually processed on google's servers rather than the device, so you don't just need internet to activate it, but you need a connection to use it. Reports say it works quite well on wifi, mostly okay on 3G and not very well on EDGE. It also means one might want to use other ways of inputting text when abroad, for example, since roaming data is expensive.
