What are your tricks for driving in the snow with a manual?
^ Actually something I'd prefer to see answered, by you or anyone else, since this is my first winter as a driver. Because of my job, I had to do a great deal of driving even during the middle of the snowstorms, and it scared me half to death. My car doesn't have great tires and was wobbling all over the road even when everyone else was fine!
Go slow. Don't let the speeders intimidate you!
Pump your brakes.
Steer into the skid.
If the road is icy, your tires are spinning and you aren't moving, downshift....though sometimes if you are at a stop you may have to shift into second to get going.
If you are stuck in a snowbank, rock the car. Reverse/first. Reverse/first.
Get bags of cat litter or sand in your trunk to weigh it down (that will give you more control) and to put under your tires if you get stuck.
Remember bags, meaning multiple. You want your little care weighed down as much as possible.
Does your pup eat dry dog food? Large bags of that will work just make sure to replace what you take out.
Old newspapers or card board would be good to have on hand also.
Have an emergency kit in your back seat/trunk. For example, high energy foods such as candy bars, dried fruit, and meat jerky. Hand and foot warmers (a link: http://www.uline.com/BL_1198/Hand-and-Foot-Warmers?pricode=wq826
You can usually find these at K-Mart, Target or the like.
A couple of blankets
Emergency flairs.
Maybe if you are not going to be driving out in the countryside you won't need the entire emergency kit but at least have flairs.
Have a reliable cell phone and make sure it is always charged and with you.
Don't worry to much. I find the more I worry about a thing the harder it is to do.

Or people who like to actually be in control of their cars. Automatics are sloppy.

Acceleration is useless in automatics. I don't know why people even try to argue this.

I don't understand why its useless in automatics. I accelerate just fine.

As I said before, its a question of preferring control, not of "needing" it.

More control is better because, as you say, you know what's coming up on the road.
