It really makes you uncomfortable to critique his work because he's your friend. You could tell him in your own way that...
For him to be successful, he needs constructive criticism, and you don't feel comfortable criticizing your friend. (If that's the case.)
You don't have to te him your opinion of the work if you don't want to. Are you a writing professor or a former English major? If not, then you probably aren't qualified to give him the correct type of constructive criticism he needs to be successful in this endeavor anyway.
THEN, if you want to, you say "I like this and this, but think this and this could use some work," yadda yadda.
If people see that as a copout, whatever.
