Why not? The underlying themes are good - especially for high school. Erith Send a noteboard - 30/11/2009 07:06:05 PM
for my grade 12 English class? I have to do a seminar on a general theme in the said book.
"

What do you consider "challenging?" What have you already covered in your class? Are you looking for a classic novel or soemething contemporary? Are they going to get their knickers in a wad if you choose something controversial? What do YOU like? Is there a particular theme you'd like to address and you need a novel to help support your presentation?

Sorry if it's too many questions. You just asked for kind of broad advice on the topic.

Here's just a few ideas that I'm bouncing off the top of my brain:

"A Tale of Two Cities" - personal sacrifice for a loved one to earn redemption, plight of low classes under aristocracy
"Lord of the Flies" - mob rule, failings of human nature and self-government
"Carrie" - cruelty of human nature, teen angst, personal breaking points, consequences, religious zealotry
"1984" - the danger of intrusive gonvernment, importance of personal privacy, malleablility of the human psyche

That's all I've got at 11:00 at night. It's been a long day.
