I think the worry is just that it's more contagious, which would be bad if a fiercer strain

develops.
I agree! Thank you for mentioning the fact that influenza is a common illness which has been deadly in many cases BEFORE Swine Flu was even discovered!
To different group of people, though.
The absolute PANIC over this frightens me. I can't believe so many people are buying into the hype. Influenza has been with us since time immemorial. Are the drug companies so worried that their much-ballyhooed vaccines won't get consumed that they resort to scare tactics? Swine Flu is milder in almost all cases than typical flu. People I know who have had it all say the same thing: the fever, nausea, vomiting are all very brief. If congestion moves into the lungs it lingers a little longer, and if not it's gone quicker.
Well, now you know one exception, huh? I've not had a bad fever for any extended time, but... despite having had pneumonia three times and several kidney infections, I'm pretty sure this is the sickest I've ever been. It's just one thing after another! Had it for a week now, and am slowly getting better, but even so, I've never experienced the flu moving into all parts of my body before. Lungs, so that I had to get an inhaler (never needed before); eyes; ear (now have infection there too), and sudden, rapid nosebleeds.
I never get a flu shot, and I can count on one hand the times in my 35+ years of life that I've had the flu. And no, I will NOT get a flu shot just because people are panicking that Swine Flu might be dangerous... in fact, most of the people I know who have had it either had just received the vaccine, or their kids had just received it. THAT to me is just crazy; see, isn't the point supposed to be PREVENTION?
I've had the flu exactly once in my entire life. And I've never gotten a flu shot. So I guess that makes me another exception...

I almost feel like I'm coming down with something, but I'm not sure.

I think I've had it. Symptoms seemed to match, anyway.

I suspect that working at a hospital gives you a rather biased sample of the populace. *NM*

According to the CDC, on average 36,000 die from the flu each year in the US.

Thank you, Greg. Finally, someone points out what it seems the general populace has forgotten!
