Thank you, Greg. Finally, someone points out what it seems the general populace has forgotten!

It's interesting though because I live in a university town, where a highly contagious flu is bound to spread like wildfire. Currently the uni clinic has stopped doing lab tests on every person with the symptoms, so numbers are hard to come by, but a month ago the official number was 500. Now I've heard from an unofficial source (spouse of medical person) that we've had 7,000-8,000 cases. That's insane! The campus is big, but still, it's roughly 1 in 6.
And interestingly enough, I know no one who has even had the regular flu this season.
1. Have you had swine flu? What was it like for you? (Symptoms, duration.)
No.
2. Do you know anyone who has?
No.
3. Is your local community being affected? What measures are they taking now?
I guess we live in the same community so you answered this already.
4. Have you ever been quarantined for any reason? What was it? How did you amuse yourself in the meantime?
No.
5. Are you nervous about swine flu, or do you still think it's been overblown?
I think it is overblown. Roughly 200,000 are hospitalized with flu like symptoms each year. 36,000 die from the regular flu. I want a breakdown of those who have died so far. Was it from the regular flu or swine flu? There is so much ignorance spreading. And people throw out numbers. But the average is 36,000 per flu season. I want to see the numbers after this flu season is over with.
I agree! Thank you for mentioning the fact that influenza is a common illness which has been deadly in many cases BEFORE Swine Flu was even discovered!
The absolute PANIC over this frightens me. I can't believe so many people are buying into the hype. Influenza has been with us since time immemorial. Are the drug companies so worried that their much-ballyhooed vaccines won't get consumed that they resort to scare tactics? Swine Flu is milder in almost all cases than typical flu. People I know who have had it all say the same thing: the fever, nausea, vomiting are all very brief. If congestion moves into the lungs it lingers a little longer, and if not it's gone quicker.
I never get a flu shot, and I can count on one hand the times in my 35+ years of life that I've had the flu. And no, I will NOT get a flu shot just because people are panicking that Swine Flu might be dangerous... in fact, most of the people I know who have had it either had just received the vaccine, or their kids had just received it. THAT to me is just crazy; see, isn't the point supposed to be PREVENTION?

I think I've had it. Symptoms seemed to match, anyway.

I suspect that working at a hospital gives you a rather biased sample of the populace. *NM*

According to the CDC, on average 36,000 die from the flu each year in the US.

I think the worry is just that it's more contagious, which would be bad if a fiercer strain
